Pure Profit from Marketing Communications as Pure Storytelling
There’s a lot of talk about the technicalities of social media - how to do it, how to measure it, which software and widget, which latest technique, etc.
But the most meaningful and results-producing aspect of social media is communicating effectively. By that I mean telling a compelling story around your brand.
It get’s little press because it is the hardest to master. But it is the most rewarding.
You see, people are moved by stories. Actions happen in your prospects when they connect the emotion from a meaningful story to your products and services.
Why do some silly things go viral for free and far surpass the attention a multi-million dollar ad campaign gets? Because they touch us and elicit an emotion. Communication is much more than the words themselves, it is a way of being that the viewer sees themselves having an opportunity in and thus wants for themselves.
Those who tell stories well, motivate generations, win elections, and will always surpass those who bombard us with features and benefits but offer us no compelling reason to engage with them.
In this way, the greatest predictor of social media success is also the most challenging to master; it is the ability to tell a story well. The truth is that companies live and die by this whether the realize it or not.
A narrative must be intentionally developed and every marketing and messaging communication and every social media post must become a building block that deepens and widens the story.
Those who massively succeed in social media, are those that influence behavior through story. With words, videos, photos and all communications media, they know how to graft powerful imagery together that elicits emotion, stimulates need, upholds a vision, and attracts engagement.
From individual brands to the Fortune 50, some of the best stories today are being told on social media. And so are some of the worst. If your story is unfocused, perhaps you have not yet developed your narrative. You may beed to get clarity to refine your value proposition. You many need to attach your benefits to a story that carries them like a growing river to a sea of prospects.
That is why I am a strong advocate that businesses of all sizes consider in advance how every social media post fits into your story, and whether it is consistent with the narrative that you’re intentional cultivating. Elicit. Stimulate. Uphold. Engage.
